Spread Awareness

  • Make a video: An informational video could be put on social media platforms like: Instagram, Facebook, Tik Tok, YouTube, ETC. It is better to try and use the sites to spread awarness then to continue to use them rehularly without trying.
  • Make a flyer: Flyers or infographics can be put up in your local area or given out by hand. Always take caution if you want to do this.
  • Make a blog or write an article: A written piece can be easily done and possibly published in a newspaper/newsletter. You can also post a blog anywhere you would like.
  • Talk to your friends & family: Word spreads fast, educating people close to you can help them to understand issues and help in trying to come to a solution.
  • Protest

Speak at a city council meeting. Your voice matters, so put it to good use!

    • Bring notes with you to better support your argument.
    • Bring an outline of your point with your major supporting argument.
    • Have someone you bring along with you to support you.
    • Collect data, and some anecdotal evidence if applicable

Boycott! It is form of protest done by trying to avoid companies investing in/supporting issues you do not believe in.

Boycotts are best done on a larger scale so try to get your community involved. You can do this via the steps of the Spread Awareness section.

Here are some companies to avoid based on this issue and some alternatives:

    • Company: Coca-Cola (used AI to create an ad, removing valuable human workers)
    • Alternative(s): off brand cola, Ollipop, Poppi
    • Company: Google (Has an AI overview and invests heavily into AI.)
    • Alternative(s): Ecosia (Not perfect but allows you to toggle off the AI features)
    • Company: McDonald's (used AI to create an ad, removing valuable human workers)
    • Alternative(s): Any other stor that does not use AI (Going local chains are better as you are also supporting your community)

    Email companies/your local politicians,

By calling or emailing local politicians, you can bring awarness to the issue. By placing pressure there can be a possibility for change to be made. The same goes with calling and emailing companies.

    Personal Actions

    Make an eco-brick:

    Materials:

    • Plastic bottle (do not buy one, only use one that you naturally bought out of necessity)
    • A stick or something slightly smaller than the head of your bottle and long enough to reach to the bottom of the bottle
    • Any plastic trash that naturally accumulates

    Procedure:

    • Whenever you have trash, place it inside the plastic water bottle.
    • When you notice your bottle starting to fill up, use the stick to compact the trash.
    • Once you cannot compact the inside of the bottle anymore, your eco-brick is done. You can now throw it out, or keep it for another purpose; whatever is your preference.

    Safely pick up litter:

    Materials:

    • Trash bag (preferably a compostable one)
    • Something to pick the trash up with (eg. dustpan/trash picker, tongs)
    • Gloves

    Procedure:

    • Go out to a place where you know has litter and is safely accessible
    • Use your tool to pick up the trash you see in the area
    • You can document the process but this step is optional, it is up to you
    • Once your bag is full, most of the trash has been removed, or you want to stop, tie off the bag(s) and dispose of them how you would typically dispose of trash.
    • If possible try to separate the recyclables in a separate bag

Compost (you get the bonus of free fertilizer):

    Materials:

    • Compost container (If you plan on placing this inside or near your home, make sure smell cannot easily escape the container or is masked)
    • A long stick or something to stir with (Should be bigger than the container to keep distance when mixing)
    • Any organic scraps that you have

    Procedure:

    • Add organic scraps to the compost bin
    • Add water to it every once in a while
    • Use the stick to stir the contents however often you see fit
    • The process may take a few weeks to see results when first starting out so be patient

    Make paper beads:

    Materials:

    • Left over paper
    • Glue
    • Scissors
    • Wooden dowel/toothpick
    • Nail polish/varnish

    Procedure:

    • Start by cutting your paper into long triangle strips, with one end of the triangle being the thickness you want for the bead
    • Wrap the thick end of paper around the dowel tightly so it does not slip off when continuing to the next steps
    • Along the way, periodically add glue so the paper does not unravel
    • Continue adding glue and wrapping the paper around the dowel
    • Glue down the thin end of the triangle and allow for the glue to dry
    • Add the nail polish/varnish to seal the bead off, be careful to not get too much on the edges or it may stick to the dowel/toothpick
